Essentially, the weight of the sink is supported by the counter itself and there are simply some support points on the bottom for stabilization purposes. The sealing is achieved with insulating material, eg silicone, which is placed around the perimeter of the hole, under the rim. The main practical disadvantage of inset sinks is the rim, which makes cleaning difficult and does not allow water that falls on the counter to be wiped directly into the trough.
